Mohanamukhi Natyotsav
Apart from its regular productions, Samakalin Sanskriti proudly organizes and hosts its annual theatre festival, Mohanamukhi Natyotsav, every December. Conceived as a tribute to the glorious legacy of eminent film and theatre personalities, the festival pays homage to their lasting contributions to the world of art. Since its inception, Mohanamukhi Natyotsav has grown into a prestigious cultural celebration, inviting theatre groups from across India and abroad to participate. Over the years, more than 85 groups have graced its stage, presenting over 100 productions, creating a vibrant confluence of theatrical traditions from around the globe.
The festival has had the honor of felicitating stalwarts such as Usha Ganguli, Bibhash Chakraborty, Arun Mukhopadhyay, Nilkantha Sengupta, and many other luminaries. In 2021, the group also initiated the Satyaki Roy Smarak Samman, a unique recognition dedicated to backstage workers whose tireless contributions often go unnoticed.
Now in its 19th edition in 2025, Mohanamukhi Natyotsav continues to be a beacon of artistic collaboration and remembrance. This year, the festival is dedicated to the legendary Manoj Mitra, celebrating his enduring influence on Bengali theatre.
Launched in 2024, the Inter-School Theatre Fest is one of Samakalin Sanskriti’s most cherished initiatives, bringing together creativity, education, and youthful enthusiasm on a common stage. Reputed schools from across Kolkata and its surrounding areas are invited to present their productions, many of which stem from ongoing collaborations through the group’s theatre workshops.
The festival aims not only to inspire young minds to appreciate the art of theatre but also to provide students with a platform where their talents can be showcased and celebrated before a discerning audience. More than 10 schools, along with students and teachers, have already participated, performing with remarkable dedication and artistry. Each year, eminent personalities from the theatre community are invited as members of the jury panel, while participants are honored with gifts and tokens of appreciation. The group ensures professional-level support with stagecraft, lighting, set requisites, and refreshments, creating a truly memorable experience for all.
This unique initiative serves as a bridge between theatre and education, leaving a deep impression on students and parents alike. Looking ahead, Samakalin Sanskriti envisions expanding the festival beyond Kolkata to other districts of West Bengal, carrying forward the mission of nurturing a new generation of theatre enthusiasts.
In 2025, Samakalin Sanskriti launched its Junior Acting Classes, a nurturing space designed for young and enthusiastic actors between the ages of 8 and 20. Conducted weekly, these sessions are guided by accomplished theatre professionals who mentor children in the art of performance while fostering essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and confidence.
The classes are crafted to be fun, engaging, and enriching, featuring innovative warm-up activities, improvisation, choreography, elocution, and dialogue delivery. Parental collaboration is welcomed, and regular feedback ensures that each child’s growth is supported both on and off the stage. Promoted through schools and social media, the initiative has already enrolled several eager students who thoroughly enjoy the rapport-building and creative exercises.
What makes the program unique is its vision: students are not only trained but also given opportunities to participate in full-scale productions, gaining invaluable stage experience. Looking forward, the group envisions forming a Junior Theatre Wing, where the collective talent and contributions of these budding performers will evolve into successful productions, shaping the future of Bengali theatre.
One of the core initiatives of Samakalin Sanskriti is its annual series of Theatre Workshops, designed for schools, colleges, and budding actors across the city. These workshops bring theatre to the grassroots level, creating a space where young minds and emerging performers can discover, explore, and refine their artistic potential. Conducted by members of the group alongside accomplished mentors from institutions such as NSD and RBU, as well as other renowned theatre personalities, the workshops offer a rich blend of guidance, collaboration, and inspiration.
The sessions combine both theoretical and practical learning, covering the fundamentals of acting, stagecraft, set design, make-up, and the social dimensions of performance. Participants are introduced to improvisation, physical acting, body language, and voice modulation, alongside training in dance and music. These immersive experiences not only build technical skills but also foster creativity, discipline, and social awareness.
By working closely with the younger generation, Samakalin Sanskriti aims to nurture future theatre artists while deepening its own connection to contemporary theatre practices. Over the years, these workshops have become a vibrant meeting ground for theatre lovers, mentors, and students, strengthening the cultural fabric of the community.
Samakalin Sanskriti regularly organizes Seminars that serve as vibrant platforms for intellectual exchange on theatre and its wider social relevance. These sessions bring together erudite theatre practitioners, scholars, and cultural thinkers to explore topics such as the role of theatre in contemporary society, the evolution of performance styles, theatre as a tool for education, and the challenges and opportunities facing modern productions.
Each seminar features eminent personalities from the theatre world as keynote speakers, sharing their knowledge and insights with depth and passion. The discussions are followed by interactive sessions, inviting questions, reflections, and dialogue with the audience, ensuring a dynamic and participatory atmosphere.
What sets these seminars apart is their impact: the ideas and perspectives shared do not remain confined to conversation but are thoughtfully implemented into the group’s future endeavors. In this way, the seminars become more than academic exercises—they actively shape the creative and social direction of the group.
